On October 25, 2024, South Korea entered uncharted cinematic territory by hosting its first-ever international AI-focused film festival, the Korea International AI Film Festival (K-AIFF). Held at the Korea International Exhibition Center (Kintex) in Gyeonggi Province, just outside Seoul, the event marked a milestone in the convergence of artificial intelligence and the arts.
The festival, uniquely dedicated to films created entirely using generative AI technology, attracted global attention. A staggering 2,067 films were submitted, with approximately 80%—an impressive 1,653 entries—originating from outside South Korea. This overwhelming international participation underscores the growing accessibility and creativity of AI tools in filmmaking across borders.
K-AIFF stands out as one of three major film festivals hosted in the culturally vibrant Gyeonggi Province, signaling the region’s ambitions to position itself as a hub for innovation in creative industries.
The festival’s highlight was the awarding of the Grand Prize to “Mateo”, an AI-generated film produced by Korea’s own Mateo AI Studio. Directed by a talented trio—Shinwoo Moon, Eekjun Yang, and Juwon Jung—Mateo captivated judges with its compelling narrative and cutting-edge execution, showcasing the potential of generative AI to craft stories that resonate on a human level. Watch it:
Mateo has a very stylized image quality and almost feels like a rendered movie at times. It was one of the most “cinematic” of the entries, but I also enjoyed watching “Tales Untold” and other high-quality entries. You can find them using the official playlist on YouTube.
As the festival closed its inaugural edition, its success affirmed a new era for filmmakers, where the possibilities of artificial intelligence are redefining the boundaries of storytelling. With such momentum, K-AIFF has set the stage to become a global focal point for the future of AI cinema and we can’t wait to for the next edition.
The advances in generative AI are so drastic they are poised to let a much broader set of talented storytellers express their creativity without requiring the means of production previously accessible by an elite few.
